Left4Dead public campaigns

Does anyone know how to install a campaign I downloaded? I found lots of free campaigns made by the public, but can't find instructions on how to install them so I can play them. I downloaded one, and put it in the correct folder. I can select it from the game, but it tells me I can't play it because it's not installed, or something. I'm using Steam.

I figured it out. Some of the public campaigns are quite good.

Sorry no one could help. I'm a big L4D (and L4D2) fan, but I got them on 360 so I don't have the option for adding user made content.
Wish there was cross platform play like Shadowrun and Universe at War. I'd be up for some gaming

That's very sad that you can't add-on campaigns. I think it adds hugely to the replayability of the game. We used to do this with Doom, big time. I was on Compuserve daily, looking for Doom maps.

well, we can add campaigns, but only Valve created ($5-10 each) made content 
MS doesn't believe in giving anything away for free.
so on the PC, did L4D2 kill off the L4D1 community? I heard the new campaign The Passing will merge the 2 teams so you can pick from any of the 8 characters (but only available on L4D2).

I rarely play with anyone but my one friend, but the times I did, I didn't have trouble getting into a game. I'm guessing that the L4D1 community is still going strong. L4D2 isn't THAT different a game, after all, and the original is much cheaper, for those of us who have to explain their game purchases to a significant other (my friend, not me).
It's an interesting concept you mention, but seriously, do I care if I play as Bill or Nick? No, I do not.
